Cephalocaudal direction- from the head pointing toward the feet

Emesis- vomit

Hypopharynx/Hypopharyngeal area- posterior mouth, entering the esophagus

Hypoxic encephalopathy- brain damage due to lack of oxygen

Hyperresonant- when tapped with the fingers, sounds hollow

LeForte fractures- facial fractures involving the upper palate

Nares- the openings of the nose (nare is singular)

NPO- nothing by mouth- no food or drink for a specified period of time

Perioperative- during an operative procedure

Percuss – to tap on a surface with the fingers, such as the chest
