Sharon Leidy, MS, PHN, RN, has been a Pediatric Nurse Specialist and Pediatric ICU Nurse Clinician for many years.  She has taught Pediatric Advanced Life Support for 16 years, and has been a PALS Faculty for the American Heart Association.  Sharon has developed pediatric nursing protocols and procedures for several hospital systems, and has coordinated a pediatric critical care transport program.

Pediatric Poisoning

This 1.5 hour continuing education course is designed for paramedics and EMTs. The focus is current major causes of death in the pediatric population and age related predisposition to different poisonings. Information to assist the provider in minimizing symptom severity and preventing mortality due to poisoning is stressed. Specific assessment and management of the pediatric poisoning client, contraindications of some treatments and recognition of the importance of regional poison control centers is discussed. Mechanisms of toxicity will also be discussed for various common poisons.
