Common Agents of Biological Terrorism

By Eileen Dean, MA, MN, MS, RN

This two-hour continuing education course is designed for ALS and BLS providers. It specifically discusses the nine most common organisms thought to be under development in bioterrorism communities. The course provides a brief discussion of characteristics of bioterrorism weapons. It will also give an update on common organisms used in bioterrorism and suggested care for exposure to these organisms. Agents discussed include anthrax, Clostridium botulinum, E. coli, Francisella tularensis, Legionellosis, Plague, Salmonella, Smallpox, and Typhoid in their natural state. The course does not discuss all possible bioterrorism agents nor can it predict potential variants that are being developed for weaponization.
